What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is the non-invasive therapeutic use of high intensity sound waves used to accelerate the healing process of chronic injuries and significantly reduce pain. It provides a treatment option to patients that is proven to be more effective than conservative methods with resolving stubborn injuries.

How does it work?

We combine the use of Shockwave Therapy in conjunction with osteopathic treatment to achieve clinically proven relief from persistent pain. It is an effective form of treatment used to stimulate collagen and tissue repair, reduce chronic tendon pain and inflammation, improve blood flow and healing to joints and ultimately improve mobility for our patients.

What does a Shockwave Therapy session involve?

Once your practitioner deems you eligible for receiving shockwave, they will administer the treatment through a handpiece which generates radial shockwaves. These shockwaves are transmitted to the injury site through a conducting gel. The session generally consists of between 2000-2500 pulsed shockwaves to the injury site, usually taking no more than 5-10 minutes. Following a session you may experience some localised tenderness or soreness that usually subsides within 1-2 days post treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

Patients usually require 3-5 sessions per treated area and typically show immediate results in pain reduction or range of movement from their first shockwave session. Your practitioner will determine the frequency of these sessions and typically they are spaced 5-10 days apart.

Is Shockwave Therapy painful?

Shockwave is a short treatment (usually five to ten minutes) that may be fairly uncomfortable.

Most people are able to easily tolerate it. However, if you cannot tolerate it, adjustments on the machine can decrease the pressure you feel.
